The Grapefruit Diet May Make Some Sense OR Maybe Not!

Another fad diet that's been around for years is the Grapefruit Diet, also called the Hollywood Diet. This diet began in the 1930's with the claim that grapefruit contained a fat burning enzyme that activated when you ate half a grapefruit along with small amounts of other foods. So eat grapefruit and lose fat.

This claim was dismissed as a myth. The experts saying that any weight loss was due to reduced calorie consumption. The calorie level might even be so low as to be dangerous. However more recent research has again highlighted this diet.

A 2004 study at Scribbs University found in a 12 week study that on average study participants who ate a half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds. Those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice lost 3.3 pounds. Many participants lost 10 pounds.

The research indicated some connection between grapefruit consumption and insulin levels. Grapefruit may have some property to reduce insulin levels and promote weight loss. Maybe the grapefruit just helped to satisfy the appetite or maybe there really is some unique grapefruit property. Maybe the meals contained fewer calories still just like in the earlier studies, who knows?
