Lean Not Fat

Are There Really Any Fat Burning Foods?

Eat a balanced diet with fewer carbohydrates, plenty of good protein and good fats and your insulin levels will stay lower. Then your body will break down it's fat stores to use for energy.

Insulin and glucagon are the two main hormones that regulate nutrient use. Glucagon signals the liver to release sugar, raising the blood sugar level. Glucagon also signals cells to release fat for use as energy or protein to be used for building. Insulin is necessary for the transfer of nutrients into the cells. Insulin also tells the liver the levels of sugar and the liver controls the production of fat from sugar.

Insulin?

Here's the deal. The ratio of insulin to glucagon determines whether food is used for energy, building or fat. More glucagon results in more food used as building material or energy. More insulin means more food will be stored as fat. Glucagen is released when proteins are eaten. Insulin is released when carbohydrates are eaten. Neither is released when non starchy vegetables and fats are eaten.

What you find is this. Eat carbohydrates alone and the ratio of insulin to glucagon is too high. Eat protein alone and the ratio insulin to glucagon is too low. But eating fats or non-starchy vegetables has no effect on the insulin to glucagon ratio. So if you eat a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and non-starchy vegetables, you get a balanced ratio of insulin to glucagon. Under those conditions, the foods you eat will be used for building, fuel and fat storage or use at just the right rate.

Here's the Trick...

The trick is non-starchy vegetables can be eaten with no fear of adding fat. Non-starchy vegetables contain no carbohydrates and do not produce fat. Most proteins, with some exceptions, also contain no carbohydrates and do not contribute to fat. Also, it's difficult to overeat proteins since the body has a limiting mechanism to prevent overeating proteins.

Eat all the non-starchy vegetables you want plus good fats and proteins and you will burn fat. What you're eating will be fat burning foods. Limit carbohydrates to just what you need to match your metabolism and your body will burn fats and use sugars properly.
